Club History
From a lawn in front of municipal offices to MGC & LGC
The Beginning
1972 - 1979
1972: Playing on a Lawn
In 1972, a group of former hockey players decided that they needed to start a hockey club in the Milnerton area. Pat Lanham, Merle Milner and Pat Downing approached the Milnerton Municipality to request a field to play on.
Unfortunately there was a lack of available sports grounds, but luckily the ladies were granted permission by former Mayor Theo Marais to play hockey on the lawn in front of municipal offices in Pienaar Road in Milnerton until a field was sourced. Their commitment was unwavering, demarcating fields with white tape and setting up and taking down collapsible goal posts for every game and practice.
1973: Official Registration
The Milnerton Ladies Hockey Club was registered with the Hockey Union. The allocated colours were turquoise and brown, a far cry from today's red and navy.
1974: Theo Marais Park
Mayor Theo Marais agreed for an area along Koeberg Road, now known as Theo Marais Park, to become the sport's grounds for Milnerton Ladies Hockey Club and various sports codes.
1975-1976: Our Clubhouse
A clubhouse and changing rooms were built. The council erected the main building which now houses Milnerton Hockey and Cricket.
1978: MHC United
The men and ladies amalgamated to form one Milnerton Hockey Club, now playing in blue and white. A second field and floodlights were added.
"These facilities remain our home grounds to this day. Attempts to have an astro turf erected in the area have fallen on deaf ears, but as these ladies have shown, if we work together, anything is possible!"
The Resurgence
2011 - Present
Although our club was founded in 1972, a lot of our history was not archived and has subsequently been lost. On the brink of extinction, our club has had a resurgence from 2012 onwards. It was a rebirth of sorts and the correct steps have been taken to record our history since then.
